For nearly three decades, Semirara Mining and Power Corporation (SMPC) has been promoting development on Semirara Island and encouraging the growth of a self-sufficient economy. As the island progressed, the need for transportation networks and community facilities also became increasingly evident.
Through close coordination with local stakeholders, SMPC helped build and maintain facilities and infrastructure that improve mobility, expand economic opportunities, and support community development on the island.
Connecting Communities: Commercial Port and Marine Transport

As an island community, access to reliable sea transportation is crucial. With this in mind, SMPC assisted in the construction works of Pinagpala Port, which was completed in 2019. It is one of the few ports on the island that connects to major destinations such as Mindoro and Caticlan.
Complementing the commercial port is the company's passenger vessel, the MV Ma. Cristina. The vessel can carry 200 passengers, providing transportation services for both residents and employees traveling to and from nearby islands and mainland centers.
Opening New Horizons: Semirara Island Airstrip

SMPC also constructed and maintains Semirara Island's sole airstrip, expanding travel options available to local communities. At 1.8km long, the airstrip supports small aircraft and regular flights to and from the island.
The airstrip has strengthened Semirara's connection to the mainland, ensuring that the island has a direct line to the rest of the country and mitigating the challenges of its geographical isolation.
Paving the Way: Community Roads

Together with the local government, SMPC has assisted in the construction and maintenance of more than 50 km of roads across the island.
The island’s expanded road networks have improved transportation for the island’s residents, providing them with easier access to schools, healthcare, markets, and other essential services. The roads also support the movement of goods and food supplies, contributing to increased economic activity and livelihood opportunities.
Creating Convenience: Utilities in Semirara

SMPC has established communication infrastructure and access to financial services. These everyday essentials helped ensure that residents can enjoy the conveniences typically found in larger urban areas.
Today, the island has four telecommunication towers that provide residents with 4G internet connectivity. Residents also benefit from improved financial services, with banking facilities and ATMs. Plans to upgrade connectivity in the island are ongoing, including access to Starlink’s satellite-based internet service.
Venues for recreation: Common Public Facilities
Beyond laying the foundations to support Semirara Island’s economic growth, SMPC also established shared public spaces and community facilities that have become integral to daily life on the island. These include the SMPC Plaza, food court, and sports facilities such as the Olympic-sized pool, oval, and grandstand, complete with stadium seating.
With its involvement in infrastructure development, SMPC has helped strengthen connectivity, accessibility, and convenience for Semirara Island’s residents. As the island continues to progress, these foundations support the growth of more resilient communities and create opportunities for a more self-sustaining future.
