Semirara Island General Information

Corporate Social Responsibility

As soon as it took over management of Semirara Coal Corporation in 1997, DMCI Holdings Inc., started to look for ways to off-set the impact of mining operations on Semirara Island. It understood the need to build a strong rapport with the local communities to improve the viability of coal mining operations in  a place that did not have much to boast of except some fishing and farming, and coal production that had never gone beyond one million metric tons in the 1980’s until 1998.

Island Sustainability is both a vision and a goal for life in Semirara.  It seeks to balance the giving and taking between man and environment, the company and its hosts, the current wants and necessities against the future’s gifts.

Semirara Mining Corporation works toward this vision through its  program that addresses requirements for electrification on the island, education and skills training for school-age residents, employment and livelihood, environmental protection, and economic empowerment by harnessing the island’s resources and re-investing in the people and the environment.
